Great American Wheat Harvest and Miss America 2011

Reposted from the Barn Anew Blog

The Barn was buzzing with excitement last week.  We were honored to be hosts to Conrad Weaver of ConjoStudios, LLC, producer of the documentary, “The Great American Wheat Harvest”.  Meeting at the Barn with him from Billings, Montana, were Melody Dobson of Baseline Communications and Jody Lamp of Lamp PR & Marketing.  To get the marketing campaign for the documentary jump started  Teresa Scanlan, 2011 Miss America, was also here to tape a PSA for the film, before she boarded a plane for the Middle East to visit with America’s troops. ”The Great American Wheat Harvest” tells the agricultural story of America’s wheat producers and the combine crews that travel the plains of the Midwest from Texas to the Canadian border.  Their annual cross country trek is a saga which captivated Conrad Weaver’s imagination and thus the impetus to create the film.  The documentary will tell the saga of America’s harvest crews, who cut deep furrows through 10 states, not only with the wide swaths that their combines and harvest machinery have sculptured the prairies with, but also the personal drama of deep human relationships, arduous work, tragedies and joys and celebrations.  It is an American story that all Americans need to know.  After having seen the film, you will definitely have a deeper appreciation for the loaf of bread that you lift from the grocery store shelf and load into your shopping cart.  And you will have a deeper respect for American agriculture!

Movie Title Revealed

Film Maker Reveals NEW Wheat Harvest Movie Title

Frederick, MD – May 3, 2012 – Maryland-based independent filmmaker, Conrad Weaver of ConjoStudios, LLC, along with Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan, told KNEB News in Scottsbluff, Neb., on Wednesday, that GREAT AMERICAN WHEAT HARVEST is the title for the new wheat harvest movie documentary. Watch the video from KNEB.

Endorsing the efforts to promote a positive story about agriculture and the process that it takes to produce the food we eat, Scanlan supported the documentary project by filming a public service announcement to help recruit interest in sponsorship, in her hometown area of Gering and Scottsbluff, Neb., at the Barn Anew Bed & Breakfast business of Cher and Allen Maybee.

Set to release Spring 2014, the Great American Wheat Harvest documentary will follow the wheat harvest 10-state region from Texas up to the Canadian border, featuring the stories of America’s wheat producers and the hard-working harvesting crews.

Weaver told KNEB News he got the idea for the film two years ago after following a wheat harvest blog, All Aboard Harvest, published by the High Plains Journal. He met Scanlan last year at The Food For Thought event at Kansas State University and asked if she would participate in the promotional trailer that will be used to help raise the funding for the production costs of the movie.

Visit the website at www.greatamericanwheatharvest.com to find out how you can help and make a financial contribution to the development and education of telling this vital story of American agriculture production. A digital file of the promo trailer also is available upon request.

Miss America 2011, Teresa Scanlan Endorses Film

Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan Speaks Out to Promote American Documentary Wheat Harvest Movie

Frederick, MD – April 25, 2012 – Continuing her efforts to speak out in support of American agriculture, Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan joins Maryland-based independent filmmaker, Conrad Weaver of ConjoStudios, LLC, to help promote and share the story of where our nation’s food comes from and how it is produced.
Filming on location from her hometown area of Gering and Scottsbluff, Neb., Scanlan plans to help Weaver voice a call to action for American agriculture to support and promote the production of the Wheat Harvest Movie, an American documentary set to release Spring 2014.

Scanlan says she is honored to be an advocate for the film, which will encompass a 10-state region and showcase the lives of hard-working American families, who spend as many as 100 days each year traveling from state to state harvesting the wheat that feeds the world.

“Because the average American is becoming generations removed from the farm, most people don’t understand the connection between the thousands of family farms across the country and the food that ends up on their table,” she says. “It’s important for us to keep telling the story and inform people about the farmers and harvesters that help make our food supply a safe, abundant, and affordable reality.”

Weaver applauds Scanlan’s continued efforts to speak out for agriculture and carry the positive story to non-agriculture audiences who might not otherwise hear the farmers and ranchers message.

“We couldn’t be more honored to be working with Teresa in this capacity and appreciate the national presence she brings to American agriculture,” he says. “The farmers and harvesters featured in the movie take an incredible financial risks to ensure this vital crop helps feed our nation and world.”

Weaver also recently collaborated with two Billings, Mont., based independent, public relations and marketing consultants to serve as ConjoStudios’ national executive co-coordinators for the Wheat Harvest Movie. Melody Dobson of Baseline Communications and Jody Lamp of Lamp Public Relations & Marketing will provide strategic planning, public relations and marketing services to bring a collaborated group of partners together for support of the project.

The new movie title will be announced soon. A promotional trailer for the film can be seen at www.wheatharvestmovie.com. A digital file of the promo trailer also is available upon request.

US Custom Harvester’s Convention

The USCHI Convention Exhibit Hall

This past week I spent several days at the US Custom Harvester’s convention in Grand Island, NE. Over 900 people involved in harvesting attended this event which is held annually. Attendees can take advantage of meeting other harvest crews, equipment manufacturers, and support industries. The sharing of ideas and experiences helps harvest crews stay current with the latest technologies and tools to make the harvest more efficient and cost effective.

It was great to meet supporters!

We had a booth in the trade show to make people aware of the Wheat Harvest Movie. I was able to meet with quite a number of our supporters and hopefully gained some new supporters along the way. The convention is hosted by our Platinum sponsor for the Wheat Harvest Movie the U.S. Custom Harvesters, Inc. I want to thank the board of the USCHI for letting me come and be a part of the convention, and I want to thank them for letting me speak the the entire group during the lunch meeting on Thursday.

The feedback I got from the harvesters and quite a number of supporting industries was very positive. People are excited that we’re telling the story of the harvest and not just trying to make a drama-filled TV show. They especially liked the beauty shots in the movie trailer; those are my favorite scenes too, of course.

While at the convention, one of my goals was to meet and talk with as many potential sponsors as possible. I was able to do that, meeting with representatives from MacDon, New Holland, Case IH, John Deere, Gleaner Combines, and others. Although I didn’t get anyone signed on board to sponsor during the convention, they were all very receptive, and a number of the larger companies ready for more discussions about this.

We’ll keep you posted, of course!  If you’re interested in supporting this project, please go to the web site and click on the “DONATE” button. We’re looking for a few $500 club  and $1000 club members. Would you consider joining us?

Thank you for reading, and we’ll keep you posted on our progress!

February 28 Press Release

USCHIFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
U.S. Custom Harvesters 2012 Convention Features Promotional
Trailer for Upcoming Wheat Harvest Movie – An American
Documentary to Tell the Story of Where Our Food Comes From

GRAND ISLAND, NE – Feb. 28, 2012 – To showcase the lives of hard-working American families who spend as many as 100 days each year traveling from state to state harvesting the wheat that feeds the world, a promotional trailer of the Wheat Harvest Movie will be featured at the 2012 U.S. Custom Harvesters, Inc. annual convention March 1-3 at the Fonner Park Exposition and Events Center in Grand Island.

Promoting interest in the film, exploring and securing additional sponsorships opportunities, Wheat Harvest Movie executive producer and director, Conrad Weaver of ConjoStudios, plans to interview harvest crews and families during the convention and allow them to tell their stories and capture the essence and understanding of where our food that contain wheat– like breads, cereals, flour – come from.

“The goal of this wheat harvest documentary is to tell the story of an important part of our American agriculture few people know about,” Weaver says. “They take incredible financial risks to get this vital crop from the field to the table.”

Weaver, who recently received a 2011 Telly Award for producing a documentary film about “Mi Refugio” – a story about a school for poor children in Guatemala, says the three-day U.S. Custom Harvesters annual convention offers the ideal locale for meeting and connecting with the harvesting community and third generation custom harvesters like, Dan Misener, who is featured in the promotional trailer.

“People need to know our story, so they can know and understand what it takes to get that loaf of bread on their table,” Misener says.

Tracy Zeorian, a custom harvester and current U.S. Custom Harvesters president, says the making of the documentary can only help better educate and communicate the understanding of where our food comes from.

“We can’t lose that focus or awareness.,” she emphasizes. “Because once we do that, how are we ever going to regain our ability to feed ourselves or the world.”

For media interviews and questions, Weaver will be available from Wed., Feb. 29 through Sat., March 3 at the Fonner Park Exposition and Events Center, 700 East Stolley Park Road, Grand Island, NE. Please contact him at (301) 606-7794.

Watch a promotional trailer for film at www.wheatharvestmovie.com. A digital file of the promo trailer is also available upon request.  The Wheat Harvest Movie is sponsored in part by the U.S. Custom Harvesters, Inc.

Preparations for USCHI Convention

USCHI CONVENTION
I’m making my final plans for the US Custom Harvesters convention March 1-3 in Grand Island, NE.  I will be there representing the Wheat Harvest Movie and talking with people about the project and what we’re planning on doing with the film.  I’ve printed my Wheat Harvest Business cards, and am working on a banner and other items for the booth.

My goal at convention is to raise awareness about the movie, and raise additional funds so we can begin production in May. My plan is to be in Texas in mid-late May to meet several crews who will begin harvest there. We’ll then be catching up with harvest crews off and on all Summer long, and probably even into the Fall of 2012. Be sure to check back to this blog for updates all throughout the convention, and perhaps even a LIVE video stream from the exhibit hall floor. More about that later.

NAWG OPEN HOUSE
Several weeks ago I had the privilege of attending the National Association of Wheat Growers open house event. I met a ton of wheat growers and leaders of wheat organizations from all over the USA. It was a great event and it was awesome to meet so many people who are heavily involved in the wheat industry. Senator Baucus from Montana joined the group there and gave a short talk. (See photo).

NAME THAT MOVIE
As you may know the title: Wheat Harvest Movie is our current working title. It’s not the final name of this documentary. I’d love to hear your ideas for a name for our movie. Send me an email or message though this blog or through Facebook.

That’s all for this week… More updates coming next week.
